Google is dropping support for Internet Explorer 6 (IE6) and older browsers.
This Official Google Enterprise blog urges users of Google Apps to upgrade.
“The web has evolved in the last 10 years, from simple text pages to rich, interactive applications including video and voice. Unfortunately, very old browsers cannot run many of these new features effectively. So to help ensure your business can use the latest, most advanced web apps, we encourage you to update your browsers as soon as possible,” Google says.
The choices are listed as:
“Many other companies have already stopped supporting older browsers like Internet Explorer 6.0 as well as browsers that are not supported by their own manufacturers,” Google says. Read more »

One of the most remarkable applications you can add to an Android phone is a barcode reader.
You just point your phone at a barcode with the program open and scan it. Once the code is read the software gives you an option to read about it via web search, Google Product Search or book search, with associated reviews and price comparisons.

A new survey reveals one in five Australians now use a mobile phone to surf the internet.
Almost 20 percent (19.6pc) of those surveyed by free online classifieds website Gumtree.com.au revealed they access the internet via mobile phone due to the ease, accessibility and quality now available through smart phones such as the iPhone or Blackberry.
Indicating the demise of the internet café, just 6pc of those polled in the survey use an internet café to browse online. In addition, a third (33pc) of all respondents log on to the internet on their work PC. Read more »
I used Coveritlive recently to report live from the final of a tennis tournament. I was impressed with how easy it was to use.
On the occasion of its second birthday, Coveritlive president Keith McSpurren wrote to users this week outlining some of the plans and features.

I’ve installed Piwik web analytics on the Gorey Media server.
Piwik is open sourceweb analytics software that provides detailed reports on website visitors. Features are built inside plugins. Users can add new features and remove the ones they don’t need.
Piwik describes itself as the open source alternative to Google Analytics.
I’m using both. I like the fact Piwik gives live stats and has widgets you can display in a website.
You can see an example here.
Piwik is a fairly hefty 2.6MB to upload, but it’s easy to install and there seems to be a vibrant user community, with new plugins being added. You can monitor stats for numerous websites from a single install.
ThinkFree Mobile for Android is now available at a cost of US$14.95 (A$17.25).
Users can now view word processing, spreadsheet and presentation documents including Microsoft Office Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Adobe PDF.
It’s only a viewer at this stage, as far as I can tell, despite the claims on this blog post.
The ability to access Google Docs is neat.
However, I’m not sure how useful this will be without editing capabilities, except to share and store documents.
When I started using WordPress about five years ago it was one of numerous blogging platforms available. I won’t list all the options I tried, because some are so unmemorable I’ve forgotten them.
Pivot was my favorite for a while, until I discovered WordPress.
If you’re reading this you probably have an interest in web software and know what WordPress is all about. You will know it’s free, has a large user community, and comes with numerous free themes and plugins to extend its capabilities.
You may not know about WordPress MU. It’s the multi-user version of WordPress and this site is a working example.
Anyone can register on My Say to establish their own blog as part of an integrated community. Read more »
I’ve just bought a 12-month subsrciption to Skype’s Unlimited Calls to Country plan for A$70.
It enables me to call free anywhere in Australia at any time.
I tested it tonight with a 25-minute call from South Australia to my mother in Victoria. It was logged immediately in my account after hanging up as a zero-charge call.
The sound quality was excellent using an attached Skype phone with SkypeMate software.
It was never going to take long before criminals began targeting social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook.
When you think about, they’re handy tools to learn when someone is likely to be away from home, especially with geographic tracking features.
Insurer RACV is advising home owner to take care when posting information about themselves on social networking sites after a report from the United Kingdom that links thieves to the online sites.
